Medical IV Rehydration

Why Choose Medical Rehydration at Summit Health?

Intravenous (IV) rehydration is a medical procedure used to rapidly restore fluid and electrolyte balance when oral intake is insufficient or not tolerated. This service is specifically designed for patients suffering from acute viral illnesses (Influenza, COVID-19), gastrointestinal symptoms, or moderate dehydration.

At Summit Health, we prioritize clinical safety and symptom relief with:

  • On-site viral testing (Flu, COVID-19, Strep) to confirm diagnosis.
  • Physician-led assessment to determine medical necessity.
  • Nurse-supervised administration with continuous vital sign monitoring.
  • Private clinical setting to isolate contagious patients safely.

During your treatment, you will be seated in a private, sanitized environment with Wi-Fi access, ensuring you can rest comfortably while our medical team manages your recovery.

  • Isotonic formulation that matches the body’s natural fluid balance.

Lactated Ringer’s Solution

  • An electrolyte-balanced fluid containing sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and lactate.
  • Often prescribed for aggressive rehydration or recovery from gastrointestinal fluid loss (vomiting/diarrhea).
  • Helps correct metabolic imbalances caused by acute illness.

Targeted Electrolyte Support

  • Administered only if clinically indicated.
  • Additives such as Potassium or Magnesium may be included in the fluid prescription based on the assessment of your symptoms and history.
  • Note: We do not offer “vitamin cocktails” or non-medical wellness mixtures.

How Medical Rehydration Works At Summit Health

Triage & Assessment

Your appointment begins with a medical evaluation, including vital signs and a review of your symptoms. If you suspect a viral infection, we perform rapid diagnostics (Flu/COVID-19/Strep) on-site to guide the treatment plan.

Physician Prescription

IV therapy is not a menu item; it requires a medical order. Our on-site medical team reviews your assessment. If IV rehydration is deemed medically necessary to treat dehydration or symptom severity, a prescription is written immediately.

Monitored Administration

Infusions are performed in a private setting to prevent cross-contamination. A nurse monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, and infusion site throughout the treatment (typically 45–60 minutes).

Discharge & Care Plan

Once your vitals are stable and hydration levels are restored, you are discharged with home-care instructions. If you have a primary care provider, a record of the treatment can be sent to them upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

No. Unlike our iron infusions, this service is designed for acute care. Our on-site medical team performs the assessment and writes the prescription during your visit if you meet the clinical criteria for dehydration.

Is this the same as a “Vitamin Drip” or “Hangover Cure”?

No. We strictly adhere to Quebec medical guidelines. We do not offer “wellness drips,” “immune boosters,” or “anti-aging” cocktails. This is a medical treatment using hospital-grade crystalloid fluids solely for the treatment of dehydration and acute illness.

Can I come in if I am contagious (COVID/Flu)?

Yes. Because we are a medical clinic, we have protocols for contagious patients. Please inform us when booking so we can prepare a private isolation room for your infusion to protect other patients and staff.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most private insurance plans cover “Medical Consultations” and “Nursing Procedures.” We provide a detailed medical receipt. We recommend checking with your insurer regarding coverage for acute care services.
